On Monday 16 October 2017, Bethlehem University was pleased to welcome His Eminence Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches of the Holy See.
Vice Chancellor, Brother Peter Bray, welcomed His Eminence and affirmed the importance of such visits as Bethlehem University is an oasis of peace and hope.
Brother Peter thanked the Cardinal for the financial, moral and spiritual support that Bethlehem University receives from his congregation and the Vatican. This enables the university to continue as an icon for this society and to carry out its mission to serve the Palestinian people through education.
In his welcoming note, Dr. Michel Sansur, Executive Vice President, stressed that Cardinal Sandri is a role model for educators and students who combines wide learning and diplomacy with unwavering faith and zeal, traits which can be identified with Lasallians in a Catholic University.
After enjoying a savory lunch in the University’s Hotel Management training restaurant, Cardinal Sandri shared his appreciation for the presence and work of the university.
Visibly heartened by the positive atmosphere and Palestinian style hospitality within Bethlehem University’s walls, Cardinal Sandri lavished praise on the Brothers and the local Christian community for being able to create a space of learning and growth.
Before he was appointed Cardinal-Deacon and Prefect by Pope Benedict the 16th in 2007, Cardinal Sandri served in different parts of the world as Apostolic Nuncio and in the Vatican as Chief of Staff of the Secretary of State. He is also Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Oriental Institute.
The Vatican, through the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the De La Salle Christian Brothers are the co-founders of Bethlehem University, the only Catholic university in the Holy Land.
Bethlehem University is very appreciative of the visit of His Eminence and continued support to Bethlehem University.
