News of the Institute and Lasallian Family

Rome, December 22, 1998
Message from Br. John Johnston, Superior General

Dear Lasallians of the Pacific-Asia Educators Conference,

It is with great joy that I send you my warmest salutations as you meet for the Asia-Pacific Lasallian Educators Conference 1998 hosted by our Brothers and colleagues in Hong Kong, China.

Coming from different parts of Asia and Oceania you reflect the very rich diversity of nationalities, ethnic groups, cultures and faiths of this vast region. You work in different types of educational institutions where you exercise different kinds of roles and responsibilities. But you are united by a common dream and a common mission: to give you a true, Lasallian education.

You have gathered to reflect on the meaning of this shared mission and discuss its implications in the context of religious pluralism. This theme is of great relevance to you because it addresses the reality of almost all the societies and educational centres where you live and work. Your shared experience and reflection is also relevant to the rest of the Lasallian Family because shared mission, ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue and inculturation from the essential fabric of the mission of Lasallians the world over.

Your rainbow of backgrounds and experiences is a tremendous resource which should enrich your meeting. I am confident that at the close of this assembly, you will have even much more to offer all of us regarding the pursuit of human and Christian education in an increasingly pluralistic world.

You and your intentions will be in my prayers during the days of your conference. May St. La Salle, our Father and Founder, guide you to a clearer understanding of our common Lasallian vocation and a deeper commitment to serve the persons entrusted to your care.
