1998-1999

The New York District is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the arrival in New York City of the first Brothers from France who began the Lasallian mission of Christian education in New York. Four Brothers, Albien, Andronis, Pastoris, and Stylien, sailed from France aboard the United States and arrived in New York on July 26, 1848. They were welcomed to St Vincent's Parish by Bishop Hughes and Father La Font. On September 4, 1848 they began their Lasallian educational mission by opening a school for boys in the basement of St. Vincent's Church. This school was an immediate success, and this lead to the opening of many other schools in New York City, New York State and other sections of the United States. La Salle Academy in New York City traces its foundation to the school in St. Vincent's Parish, hence it is also celebrating its 150th Anniversary during this academic year 1998-1999.
The theme for the anniversary year is Together for the Future.
The New York District's anniversary celebration began with a Vesper Service held on Sunday, July 26, 1998 (the actual anniversary date) in St Patrick's Old Cathedral where the first Brothers worshipped and where in 1849 the Brothers opened a school for boys. Brother Raymund Suplido, General Councillor, presided at the Service and brought the greetings of Brother John Johnston, Superior, as well as the greetings of the Institute. The Service was graced by the presence of Brother Jacques d'Huiteau, Visitor of France, who brought greetings from the Brothers of France.
Participating in the Service were Les Petits Chanteurs from Passy Buzenval, France, a school where Brother Stylien, one of the first four Brothers, had been the Assistant Director. Brother Michael Corry, Visitor of New York, addressed the gathering and presented each apostolate of the New York District with an Anniversary Flag to be hung in their school throughout the year.
Throughout the Anniversary Year there will be several events for the different parts of the Lasallian Family. The event for the Brothers took place in August when the majority of the Brothers of the District gathered with some of their lay colleagues, Lasallian volunteers and representatives of the other Districts in the Region. They gathered for several days of prayer and discussions. The theme of the conference was Together for the Future, and Brother John Johnston, Superior, addressed the gathering. |
