News of the Institute and Lasallian Family

Rome, October 1, 2002
New Institute Web Page:  Welcome to our updated web site. In November, 2001 the International Council on Communication met in Rome. One of their recommendations was that we change the 'look and feel' of our web site.  Aided by the staff of La Salle University in Manila, we have been working to revise our site, and hope this new look and expanded contents helps our Lasallian world with its information and communication needs. There is an online survey that you can complete to give us your comments and recommendations. We look forward to hearing from you.

Meeting for Young Brothers, Granada, Spain:
Sixteen young Brothers from Spain and Portugal met from August 19 - 23 in Granada, Spain for some days of ongoing formation. The first two days were devoted to thinking about the new challenges that Shared Mission and Association will mean for the Lasallian Family. Brother José María Pérez, in charge of CELAS in ARLEP, was on hand for these reflections.
Wednesday morning was devoted to visiting two centers involved with education for needy children: the SOS Infant Village and Children's Town. The afternoon was open - some went to the beach at Motril while others toured the city of Granada.
The two final days were focused on "The prophetic sense of religious life." Sister Trinity León, a Sister of Mercy and professor in the Cartuja School of Theology, contributed a wonderful reflection. Also in attendance during these days were Brothers Juan Pablo Martín DueZas, General Councillor, and Mario Vinumbrales, Visitor of the District of Andalusia.
All were pleased with the meeting, both for its formative content and for the friendly atmosphere.

Coordinating Council of Associations of Former Lasallian Students from ARLEP :

Last September 14, the Coordinating Council met at the Lasallian Regional Center in Madrid. The Council is made up of 2 members from each District, 1 member from UMAEL (World Union of Lasallian Former Students) and a Brother Advisor.
This meeting was organized by the Visitors' Conference, at its meeting in October 2001. It was agreed that the Brother Advisor would be the Brother Regional Coordinator.
There were several propositions put forth during the Council's work (creation of a "CENSUS" of Associations in the Arlep Region; animation and creation of new Associations, following and applying the recommendations of UMAEL, encouraging social-humanitarian activities within Associations, etc.)
Brother Regional Coordinator Isamel Beltrán, explained to the Council members the programs, difficulties and needs which PROYDE, a Lasallian NGO, has and the need to broaden the member base of the NGO.
José Ramón Batiste PeZaranda was elected Council President and he proceeded to distribute responsibilities among the other members. Also, the official program for the Third UMAEL Congress (May 15 -18, 2003 in Mexico) was presented.

Bahay Pag-asa (House of Hope):
Through the generous support of the Christian Brothers' District of San Francisco, Bahay Pag-asa Center for the rehabilitation of children in conflict with the Law was formally opened last June 24, 2002 in the City of Bacolod, Philippines. The Center, under the supervision of the Christian Brothers of the University of St. La Salle, is responsible for the wholistic formation of boys from ages 9 to 17 committed by the Philippine Family Courts. The Center has been constructed to accommodate a total of 60 Residents plus a long-term expansion plan for an additional 60.
Bahay Pag-asa is staffed by a team set-up and supported by the University of St. La Salle. The Center also has daily volunteer parents, teachers, and counselors who have varied responsibilities in ministering to these youth at risk. The Brothers have a Cloister-Residence inside the Center where students from the University can join the Brothers for a live-in program.
The ministry in Bahay Pag-asa is emotionally and physically draining - but God's graces are sufficient. Each Resident has a story to tell - and each story is heartbreaking. Generally, they come from poverty-stricken families with very little education, if at all. Their shattered crystal lives have to be put together. While they cannot change their past, they can change their future. With God's guiding hands, and the support of many kind benefactors, this ministry will succeed.
