The Second Phase of the Superior General's Pastoral Visit to the Region of Africa

Brother Alvaro Rodríguez, Superior General, and General Councillor Brother Yemanu Jehar spent the six weeks of 2 April to 14 May, 2002 traveling through most of the French-speaking sectors of our Lasallian world in the Region of Africa. They visited: the Districts of Congo-Kinshasa, West-Africa, and Douala; the Sub-District of the Gulf of Benin; and the Sector of Equatorial Guinea.

The District of Congo-Kinshasa:
Today the District of Congo-Kinshasa has 43 local and 4 foreign Brothers. In the formation programme they have 3 scholastics, 3 novices, and 7 postulants. The Brothers in Congo are involved in 1 Professional, 6 Secondary, and 7 Primary Schools.  A special occasion during the visit was the admission ceremony of seven young men to the postulancy programme.

The District of West-Africa:
The District of West-Africa has 39 Brothers, 6 scholastics, and 8 novices. The apostolic activities of the Brothers are distributed in six strong communities.  During the pastoral visit, a General Assembly of the Brothers in the District was organized.

The District of Douala:
The Brothers working in the District of Douala are from 10 different nationalities. The District is made up of 32 Brothers, 8 scholastics, and 4 novices. The Brothers are distributed in 6 apostolic communities serving the youth in 6 different dioceses.  The fortieth anniversary of the foundation of St. Joseph's Technical School of Diang was celebrated during the pastoral visit.
 
The Sub-District of the Golf of Benin:
This Sub-District, which includes the four countries: Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, and Guinea Conakry, is attached to the Central District of Spain. The total number of Brothers working there is 47 (23 Africans, 21 Spaniards, 2 French, and 1 Mexican), and they form 8 apostolic communities. In initial formation, there are 4 scholastics and 2 novices.  Farmers with their entire families follow an interesting formation in agriculture in one of the educational center sponsored by the Sub-District.

The Sector of Equatorial Guinea:
This Sector is part of the Central District of Spain. There are 12 Spanish and 4 Equato-Guinean Brothers distributed in 3 communities. In initial formation, there are 2 scholastics and 1 novice. De La Salle Teacher Training College makes a wonderful contribution to the country of Equatorial Guinea by training Primary School Teachers and Supervisors.
