Rome, November 20, 2002

Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy: Br. Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, superior general, received an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree from Manhattan College during the College's Fall Honors Convocation on Sunday, October 20 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.

During his keynote address Br. Álvaro said: "I would like to invite you to live out this sesquicentennial year looking forward, certainly without forgetting your roots, to imagine new ways to respond to today's problems, being creative in initiatives and offering those who remain outside the benefits of globalization that we experience today, new roads, stimulating initiatives and alternatives able to give meaning to their lives."

Recognizing the vital role teachers play at Manhattan College, five professors received a Lasallian educator award during the ceremony, and more than 100 seniors were inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society on campus. Manhattan College is celebrating 150 years of excellence in Lasallian education. It is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution that offers more than 40 major fields of study in the programs of arts, business, education, engineering and science.

Cause of beatification and canonisation of Brother THEOPHANIUS LEO: Brother Theophanius Leo (Adolphe Chatillon) was a Canadian Brother. He was an important person during his life because of the responsibilities he had, but now he is even more important for the Institute and for the Church because the cause for his beatification has been begun.

In the last week of October and the first week of November, Brother Rodolfo Meoli, Postulator General of the Institute, went to Canada to meet Mgr. Michel Parent, responsible for the causes of saints in the diocese of Montreal and Mgr. Raymond St. Gelais, Bishop of Nicolet, birthplace of the Servant of God and of various other Brothers in Canada. On this occasion also, Brother Léonard Leduc was appointed Vice-Postulator. Brother Leonard was once Secretary General of the Institute, and is now Director of Résidence De La Salle at Laval, where the Servant of God's tomb is located. The new Postulator General takes over from Brother Donald Bédard, and will work on the cause with Brothers Gilles Beaudet, Ivon Larente and Gilles Massicotte.
