Signum Fidei, Trujillo Peru: The Signum Fidei group of Trujillo, Peru, has opened an educational center to care for children from that city where we do not have a community of Brothers. It is a very dynamic group which organized the last National Congress for the Signum Fidei fraternities in Peru. They started this center with two sections of pre-primary students, with 30 students in each section. This year they will open the first grade of primary school. They already have a wonderful building and comprehensive facilities with open-air areas.

Also, in the Manos de Dios area in Lima, another Signum Fidei group is in charge of another school center in one of the poorest areas in the area surrounding the capital. At the present time, the construction of the school dining room is nearing completion while the school building and a Church have already been completed. Brother Manuel Olivé has been the heart and soul of both of these initiatives.

Nairobi, Kenya: The third Lasallian Assembly of Africa took place beginning the evening of January 2nd, 2003 through the evening of January 6th, 2003 in Nairobi. Approximately thirty-four Brothers participated in the program. The majority of participants came from the Region, with Brother guests coming from Central Spain, Rome, Holland, France and the United States of America. The keynote address delivered by Brother Yemanu Jehar, General Councillor, entitled: "The Identity of a Brother in Association within the African context", served as a backdrop for the various discussions and deliberations which took place during the assembly.

Presenters included: Brother Michel Messan, Auxiliary Visitor, Golf Benin, on initial formation now and in the future, within the Region of Africa; Brother Noel Bois, Delegate of Rwanda, and Gabriel Zabramba, Visitor, Burkina Faso, on financial planning and development leading to self sufficiency; Brother Ferdinand Nkadilu, Visitor, CongoKinshasa, on the history of the Region and a dream for the future; and Brother Nicolas Capelle, on Mission, Lasallian Education.

Moderators for the assembly included Brother Sylvain Consimbo, Burkina Faso and Brother Dominic Ehrmantraut, Lwanga District.

Much dialogue took place both in the assembly and in small group commission sharing, which were fruitful for deliberation and decision-making as the assembly came to conclusion. The closing Liturgy was held at the De La Salle Novitiate in Nairobi.

Colegio La Salle de Panamá: On January 1st two Panamanian Brothers, Victor Cedeño and Omael Yuen, made their final profession. This event had special significance because they were the first Panamanian Brothers to make final profession in over thirty years. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the Bishop of Colon, Carlos María Ariz. The Brother Superior General himself received the vows. The Brothers from the sub-District were present as they had gathered for their annual retreat. During the same ceremony eleven members of Signum Fidei renewed their promises. Brother Alvaro also had the opportunity to visit three Lasallian works in Colon, including the new Brother Miguel School, which will serve young people in a working-class area of the city. The school is now nearing completion.

Hanitra Lasallian Center - Tamatave, Madagascar: Through the initiative of the De La Salle Brothers the Hanitra Lasallian Center was founded in 2000, in Stella Maris College, Toamasina, Madagascar. The Centers objectives are to educate, to train and to develop the minds of abandoned children as well as to provide accommodation for them. The overall objective of the Center is to come to the aid of the poorest children in working class neighborhoods through education and to provide primary schooling for those young children who either have never been to school or had to drop out of school because of their parents' poverty or neglect. In fact, the Centers mission is to give these children a well-mannered upbringing that will allow them to escape from the life of roaming the streets.

News from Pakistan: Br. Vincent Thomas made his Final Vows on 22nd December, 2002 at La Salle High School, Faisalabad, in the presence of his several relatives and a great gathering of Priests, Religious and friends. The decision of Br. Vincent "to keep these vows faithfully all my lifetime" can be a reminder to each one of us that our own commitment ties in, closely, with the mystery of the Incarnation which is central to our prayer these days. Eucharist was celebrated by Msgr. Joe Coutts, the Bishop of the Diocese of Faisalabad. The staff of La Salle did us proud too, preparing and serving a five-star Buffet. Congratulation Vincent.

La Salle Higher Secondary School honoured its Principal Br. Lawrence Manuel on the 9th of January, 2003 for his services to the youth of Pakistan during his 40 years of active and dedicated work in the field of education. Br. Lawrence is a native of Sri Lanka. Brothers of the sub-District of Pakistan offer Br. Lawrence our congratulations on his having run such a long course in the service of the Lord.
