Br. Norman Wray

Br. Norman Wray: Since the beginning of the year Brothers in the sub-District of Pakistan have been celebrating the 80th birthday and the Diamond Jubilee of Religious life of Br. Norman Wray. He has completed nearly forty years of his life in Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan. Several Brothers were fortunate to be able to work with him in his present mission at the Rehabilitation Centre for drug and substance abusers in Sinjero in the Sind Province. Those of you have been there do not need me to bear witness to the high quality of the mission which Norman is exercising there in such difficult conditions. It is no exaggeration to say that I was amazed at the achievements of this man and at the extent that Norman is deeply loved and admired by the people in and around Sinjero for all he has given. He is a very determined man who is not afraid to be unconventional in his opinion and in his actions.
Norman has gained a deep respect for the people and for their sincerely held religious beliefs. He recognizes the richness that countless non-Christian people have brought to him. I have little doubt; in return, he has given powerful witness, through his example, of what it means to be Brother and to be Christian.
I am more than ever pleased that we have a strong stake in the apostolate there, and having seen the interaction of the community with the staff and the youth and with the local community. We are convinced that in Sinjero we have a Brother who has thrown in his lot with young people who live their lives on the margin and are genuinely appreciative of the solidarity that is being lived out among them. He has, as you can imagine, more than the occasional anxious moment.
In offering these few reflections on the life of Brother Norman Wray I am very aware that there are many Brothers, at home and abroad, who have lived and who continue to live in a manner that is truly a kind of Gospel. May we all be ever more aware of the richness present among us.
