Pastoral Letter to the Brothers:
Associated with the God of the Poor
Our Consecrated Life in the Light of the 4th Vow

December 25th, 2003

Rome, January 5, 2004
Br. Superior's Pastoral Letter: Every year, Br. Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, Superior General, writes a Pastoral Letter to the Brothers. This year the letter is entitled Associated with the God of the Poor, Our Consecrated Life in the Light of the 4th Vow. Published on December 25th, 2003, it is presented here in PDF (Acrobat Reader) format.

In this letter, Br. Superior comments on the impact that the "Historic Vow" of 1691 and the subsequent vows made by John Baptist de La Salle and 12 Brothers in 1694 have been making on the Institute for more than 300 years. His historical development of the topic of the Vow of Association through our history provides an excellent background for any discussion on Association for the educational service of the poor.

Based on the background he gives, he then looks at our consecrated life in the light of our vow of association. Beyond our vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and stability he examines further the relationship between association and the promotion of justice. The letter is challenging, stimulating and educational.

Although it is addressed to the Brothers, it is well worth reading by all who are involved in our Lasallian partnership. This, and the other Pastoral Letters of Br. Álvaro, can be found in the Publications section of this web site.
