Rome, 18/05/2007

Last summer, at the International Symposium of Young Lasallians (ISYL), Young Lasallians (YL) from all over the world came together for more than a week.  During this time they discussed the importance of dialogue and getting together.  A common feeling about the importance of supporting one another in our mission was very strongly shared.  In different parts of the world, among the poor and the young there are fellow Lasallians and others suffering and denied of their basic rights.  At ISYL’06 delegates asked one another if we were able to do something about it.  As our motto during ISYL’06 stated, we all believed it is a “Mission Possible.

Those days were characterized by strong positions by the delegates in favour of international days of sharing and prayers.  Delegates also called more than once for response to worldwide issues through uniting activities on specific themes for Lasallian youth from around the world.  It was believed that these responses and international Lasallian campaigns would also facilitate and strengthen connections between Regions.

The International Council of Young Lasallians (ICYL) is therefore inviting all Young Lasallians coming from the various Districts and Regions to come together for an International Lasallian Day of Prayers for Peace.  YL are being encouraged to, in their own school, group or district, and in their own way, show solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are in areas of conflict and who are suffering unjustly.   This project should be taken up in unison by as many Young Lasallian movements, Districts and Regions as possible as ONE International Lasallian Community during the 3rd week of October.

The initiatives in the different Districts and Regions could take the form of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prayer services
  • Campaigns
  • Peaceful marches
  • Sending of letters to local authorities calling for Peace in specific areas
  • Workshops
  • Art Exhibitions
  • Intercultural activities
  • Inter-religious activities
  • Other

We encourage you to forward us any relevant resources and materials related to the theme of ‘Peace’ you might have and which could be useful to other groups in preparation of this event.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could forward us the contact details of other people who you think would be interested in participating in or coordinating such an activity within their District or Region.

We also urge you to express your feelings and thoughts, accompanied by any suggestions or comments regarding such a promising international
 activity.

International Lasallian Day of Prayer for Peace

Rome, 07/28/2007

To: Brother Visitors and auxiliary Visitors,
Young Lasallian leaders and Young Lasallians

Dear Brothers and Young Lasallians,

greetings from Rome, where the International Council of Young Lasallians has been meeting over the last few days.  Referring to the mail we sent out in May regarding the International Lasallian Day of Prayers for Peace (ILDPP) we would like to take this opportunity to renew our invitation to all Young Lasallians coming from various Districts and Regions to join in an international experience of sharing.  Following the calls from the Young Lasallians present at the last International Symposium for Young Lasallians to respond to worldwide issues and strengthen their network, we would like to avail ourselves of this day to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in areas of conflict and who are suffering unjustly.

This project should be taken up in unison by as many Regions, Districts, Young Lasallian movements and schools as possible during the 3rd week of October that is between the 15th and the 21st October 2007, acting as ONE International Lasallian Community.   Even though activities could be spread on a week, these could possibly come to a climax on Sunday 21st October as to ensure we share our intentions together on the same day as much as possible.

Shortly we shall be updating the Young Lasallian web page with a section dedicated to this particular project.  This section shall also be including the final programmes coming from the different corners of the Lasallian world.  For this reason we urge you to finalise your programmes as soon as possible and forward them to ICYL in order to share them with the rest of the Lasallian Community.

We have already received news regarding activities being planned by different Lasallian centers from different Regions.  These vary from primary school pupils writing prayers on slips of papers and releasing them in the sky, to art and crafts lessons, religion lessons with a special focus on peace and conflict solving, the writing of letters to local authorities and others for secondary students.  There are also plans of night hikes and night vigils, Youth Masses with special intentions for peace and awareness raising through the compilation and distribution of leaflets regarding themes related to Peace.

Whilst thanking all those communities who have already shown interest and enthusiasm for this initiative we eagerly await news, programmes and any other material you would like to send us.

For more information please feel free to contact us on icyl@lasalle.org or visit the Institute webpage (www.lasalle.org).  We will contact you again as soon as we have more information.

Leave Jesus in our hearts, Forever!
