Brother Superior General's farewell address to the Brothers who are leaving the Generalate.
Rome 28th June 2001
Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría
Superior General |
Brothers,
Today we bid farewell to a group of Brothers who have served here in the Generalate and who will soon return to their Districts to make themselves available to their respective Brother Visitors.
Brother Adalberto Aranda has spent eight years involved with the CIL program, one as a staff member and seven as the Director. His work and the very kind way that he deals with the Brothers are well known. Helping him were Brothers Martin Spellman and Jon Lezamis for the past four years, and Brother Gérard Oustric for the past two years. These have been years of mission and support, thanks to the extraordinary gifts of these Brothers.
Brother Urban Gordon has lived in the Generalate for 35 years. We wish him a pleasant rest and we ask the Lord to continue protecting him so that he might be able to keep up with his interests.
Brother Paul Grieger came to the Generalate in 1957, which means he has lived in Rome for the past 44 years. His name is well known and appreciated by many students, men and women religious, because of the university formation courses he has taught and because of his publications.
Brother Guido Lajolo has served as the House Bursar for six years. Everyone knows his dedication, his tireless work, his efforts at adapting the Generalate as a house for pilgrims (Casa per Ferie) as he has sought to obtain the proper authorization from the respective authorities and has directed the work of the house with determination and energy. We admire and thank him for his personal care of the gardens and the orchard and for his fraternal attention to the Sisters.
Brother Leon Lauraire has spent a long time in the Generalate, first at CIL as a presenter, then as the Secretary for Education and for the past eight years as collaborating in the Lasallian Studies office. His first work on the "Conduct of Schools" will soon be in circulation. We hope that God will give him good health to be able to continue his work.
Brother Georges Ley's stay in this house has included two separate periods: from 1953 to 1979 and from 1986 until today. A period of 41 years, all together. We will miss the tasteful melodies that accompany our community singing and the organ pieces from celebrated composers, as well as his efforts to obtain airplane tickets and his service with faxes here in the Generalate.
Brother Everardo has been the Director of the House for eight years. We all know that this responsibility is not an easy one in a community with such diverse cultures. We thank him for his unconditional devotion, his fine and delicate attention and his ability to emphasize the positive qualities of the Brothers, for his example and for his patience. We thank him wholeheartedly for the successes achieved under his leadership for the "Istituto Convicto Jesus Magister", a responsibility entrusted to him by Brother John Johnston.
Brother André Rocher arrived here in 1992 and he has spent nine years of conscientious and quiet dedication in the Institute Archives, which he knows intimately. We thank him for his attention to the many people who have come to consult documents and we pray to the Lord for his health.
Brother José María Pérez Navarro has spent the past three years in Rome, one year at CIL and the following two years in university studies and writing his thesis. His efforts have been rewarded now with the title of Doctor. We are very happy for him and we wish him much success in his new ministry as animator in the CEL-CELAS programs and as a teacher at St. Pius X Institute.
Brother Anton de Roeper, having completed six years as Secretary for the Educational Mission, will remain in the community while devoting himself to his new responsibility as Secretary for Justice and Peace. He will also represent the Institute on some international educational organizations. His physical vigor and excellent health promise many years of wholehearted service.
Brother Emmanuel has devoted nine years of his life to the service of hospitality here in the Generalate with skill, dedication, patience and his refined style; he will have no difficulty in collaborating with the new team that will take care of guests and in taking on the responsibility of Community Director.
Brothers, as I conclude this brief report, I want to express my admiration for the services that you have provided the Brother Superior General and the General Council, for your fidelity and your efforts in favor of this house which belongs to the entire Institute and to the whole Lasallian Family. For many years your presence was indispensable and you have been highly generous. We appreciate, as is due, your contribution to the general services of the house.
I want to express my deep gratitude for that you have done for the Institute. We promise you our prayers and assure you of our memory. We express to you our best wishes for the next phase in your lives. Pardon us for our omissions and lack of attention that we may have had in your regard or with regard to your work and for any mistakes that we may have unknowingly made. Again, thank you one and all, many thanks for your work and for your fraternal witness.
