Program Description: An academic enrichment program for students entering the 5th, 6th or 7th grade and who need extra academic assistance. This summer program operates Monday to Friday, 8 a m - Noon. Each day includes two half hour reading periods, a half hour of phonics, a half hour of math, a half hour of a mini-course and 45 minutes of sports. The teachers, in accordance with their gifts and interests, select the themes of the mini-courses. These mini-courses each last a week.
Population Served: 50% Hispanic, 100% poor, 100% struggling academically.
Geographical Area of Service: Urban core of Kansas City, MO.
Gifts/Skills/Talents most needed: Sports Coordinators, Teachers/Tutors, someone to prepare snacks, persons familiar with and able to oversee the Accelerated Reader program.
Age Minimum: 21 and up.
Minimum/Maximum length of service: 1-4 weeks (prefer a four week commitment)
Housing Accommodations: Can accommodate two volunteers for up to four weeks in our house on Paseo Blvd., and could find other housing options in other communities (if necessary). Brothers and Lasallian Volunteers live in this large, old, five-bedroom/3-bath
house during the school year. It is located in midtown Kansas City.
Other Requirements, Expectations and/or Restrictions: We anticipate that volunteers staying with us will share in community life by helping with cooking, cleaning and joining community prayer.
Benefits: Room and Board, personal stipend (negotiable), local transportation, and if person stays all four weeks we cover the travel costs to and from Kansas City.

Special Notes: We cannot accommodate immersion groups, but it is possible to make arrangements for married couples (not with dependents).
