The Education Institute Jorge García Usta in Cartagena de Indias was awarded the Colombia Prize 2020 for its initiative “Integrated Education for Peace and Reconciliation” in the category of initiatives by state educational institutions. It is important to remember that Colombia is going through a period of transition after a long period of intermittent war with a guerrilla group for more than 50 years.
This prize is offered by one of the most important newspapers of the country, El Espectador, and by the European Union. It gives recognition to the contribution made by Lasallians in the construction of peace and reconciliation through the “Bicentenary macro-Housing Project”, which helped 1,460 students from the families who joined the programme which provided 100,000 houses at the cost of the national government.
The Education Institute Jorge García Usta is a state college which has been run by the Brothers of the District of Bogotá since its foundation in 2016. It is located on the periphery of the town of Cartagena and the mission is shared by forty-six lay Lasallian teachers led by the Brothers.
