300th Anniversary of the Death of St. John Baptist de La Salle

May 31, 2019 – The Philatelic Office of the Vatican commemorates the 300th anniversary of the death of St. John Baptist° de La Salle with a € 1.15 postage stamp designed by artist Chiara Principe.

John Baptistde La Salle was one of the great promoters of education for all people, starting first in France and then throughout the entire world. Moved by the plight of the poor and the abandonment of the children of artisans, he founded a lay community called the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He dedicated hi sentire life to the foundation of schools and the formation of the religious brothers and school teachers.

He wrote cherished works of a spiritual, catechetical and pedagogical nature for them and the students of the schools. He was canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. In 1950 Pope Pius XII proclaimed him “Patron Saint of all those who work in the field of Catholic education”.
