New York – World Congress of Catholic Schools, 2019

The World Congress of the International Organisation of Catholic Schools 2019was held in New York from the 5th to the 8th of June (OIEC 2019). The theme for the Congress was “Educating for human solidarity to consruct a civilisation based on love”. Approximately 600 educators from all five continents reflected on the identity of the Christian school, on inclusion in schools, the culture of dialogue, quality in education, ways in which to care for our common house, collaboration between establishments, informal education and the protection of children from all kinds of abuse. The documents used as a basis of discussion were the Papal Encyclical Laudato Si and the Church document “Educating for Human Solidarity”.

Panel discussions, conferences and workshops enabled people to explore ideas, so as to become aware of the situation and to set up communication links between participants.

The event closed with two calls addressed to all educators. The first call summed up the conclusions of the Congress which were read out during a plenary assembly of the United Nations by Philippe Richard, Secretary General of the OIEC. In the second call, Pope Francis highlighted the idea of a humanity based on fraternity and he stressed the need to say “No” to the culture of indifference and to be open to transcendence.

We here share with you the video of His Holiness, and we invite you to study it and to develop strategies for putting its message into practive in real.
