Lwanga District of Africa – De La Salle Scholasticate Nairobi – Kenya (Class 2021)

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, CUEA, in Nairobi, is a private leading university whose mission is to generate authentic leaders and upright members of the Church and society capable of contributing to sustainable development according to God’s plan.

Recently 3,000 students have graduated during its 40th graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremony theme for this year was: Education for actualizing life’s purpose and global citizenship.

Among the 3,000 graduates, six were De La Salle Brothers* and two Lasallians staying at the scholasticate community compound. The other students came from Christ the Teacher Institute of Education sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools which is situated in Tangaza University College (A Constituent College of CUEA).

Our congratulations go to the Brothers and Lasallians. We pray for you in your missions and ministries.

The Lwanga District of Africa was created in 1997 and is named after Saint Charles Lwanga, a Ugandan Layman and Martyr, who died for the faith. It includes six African countries: Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Mozambique (that recently joined the District, in 2020).

The De La Salle Brothers have been in the six countries that constitute the Lwanga District for many years.

In South Africa we have had Missionaries for nearly one hundred and twenty-one years, with the Irish Brothers who have primarily served the country.

The Brothers have been in Kenya for over fifty-one years. Missionaries from different nationalities have served in their different apostolates. The Lasallian Mission in Kenya is expanding progressively.

Eritrea has been blessed for some seventy-one years, firstly with Italian and Spanish Missionaries; from the very beginning local vocations were accepted.

Ethiopia has been served by American, French, Irish, Spanish and Eritrean Missionaries and today we have several Ethiopian Brothers in various stages of formation and leadership.

Nigeria had a forty-year history (as of 1999) of De La Salle Brothers with Canadian first and then Irish Missionaries receiving local vocation to the Institute from the very beginning. We have several Nigerian Brothers today.
