Leaders from Lasallian universities across the globe gathered in Nairobi last December for the <\/span>XIV International Encuentro of the International Association of Lasallian Universities (IALU)<\/b>, marking a milestone in global cooperation, governance renewal, and shared mission in higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hosted in Africa for the first time, the Encuentro brought together rectors, presidents, senior administrators, and representatives of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The meeting was further distinguished by the presence of\u00a0the Superior General, <\/span>Br. Armin Luistro,<\/b> and the Vicar General, <\/span>Br. Carlos G\u00f3mez<\/b>, underscoring the strong institutional bond between Lasallian higher education and the wider Lasallian educational mission worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

The future of Lasallian universities<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

\"\"Over several days of dialogue and exchange, participants addressed strategic priorities shaping the future of Lasallian universities, including internationalization, academic innovation, research collaboration, social engagement, and the role of higher education in responding to regional and global challenges. Particular attention was given to Africa\u2019s growing importance in the global higher education landscape<\/b> and to the need for more inclusive and balanced forms of academic cooperation.<\/p>\n

The Encuentro also served as a decisive moment for IALU\u2019s governance and institutional development. Among a number of significant resolutions,\u00a0<\/span>a historic decision was taken to formally establish the Region of Africa within the Association<\/b>, recognizing both the expansion of Lasallian higher education on the continent and its strategic relevance within the global network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This step formed part of a <\/span>broader\u00a0regional restructuring of IALU<\/b>, designed to strengthen representation, enhance coordination, and better reflect the diversity of its member institutions worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Governance and leadership<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

During the General Assembly, elections were held for the Association\u2019s senior leadership.\u00a0<\/span>Dr. David Livingston was elected President, and\u00a0Dr. Josep Santos was elected Vice-President<\/b>, each for a three-year term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In line with IALU\u2019s governance framework,\u00a0<\/span>Regional Directors were elected within their respective regions<\/b>, also for three-year mandates. The representatives elected are:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Br. Manuel Orozco \u2013 South and Central America.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Dr. Dan Allen\u00a0\u2013 United States.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Dr. Luis Ignacio Salgado\u00a0\u2013 Mexico.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Dr. Philippe Choquet\u00a0\u2013 Europe and Bethlehem.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Br. Paulos Mesmer\u00a0\u2013 Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Br. Kenneth Martinez\u00a0\u2013 Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>

    Creation of the Joan Landeros Award<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

    \"\"Another notable outcome of the Encuentro was the\u00a0creation of the Joan Landeros Award, established in honor of\u00a0Dr. Joan Landeros,\u00a0in recognition of her instrumental role in the development, consolidation, and sustained growth of IALU. <\/span>The award celebrates outstanding service and leadership in advancing collaboration among Lasallian universities<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The\u00a0first recipients of the Joan Landeros Award were <\/span>Dr. Ryan Butt<\/b> and <\/span>Dr. Chris Kennett<\/b>, recognized for their pivotal work in conceiving and developing the\u00a0La Salle Business School Alliance, a flagship initiative strengthening academic cooperation within the Lasallian network.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
