Lent as a Time of Conversion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is the theme of Pope Leo XIV&#8217;s message for this liturgical season, which begins on Wednesday, 18 February, when the Church celebrates <\/span><b>Ash Wednesday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking the start of 40 days of preparation to live the Paschal Mystery during Holy Week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLent is a time in which the Church, guided by a sense of maternal care, invites us to place the mystery of God back in the center of our lives, <\/span><b>in order to find renewal in our faith and keep our hearts from being consumed by the anxieties and distractions of daily life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, the Pontiff recalls at the beginning of his message. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-text-color:var(--awb-custom17);--awb-font-size:22px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;\"><b>Listening to the Lord<\/b><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, the Pope continues, \u201cthe Lenten journey is a welcome opportunity <\/span><b>to heed the voice of the Lord and renew our commitment to following Christ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, accompanying him on the road to Jerusalem, where the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection will be fulfilled\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attitude of listening is precisely the first key that Leo XIV proposes for living this Lent, \u201csince <\/span><b>the willingness to listen is the first way we demonstrate our desire to enter into relationship with someone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, the Pope highlights the importance of \u201c<\/span><b>making room for the word through listening<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><b> and opening oneself to <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>hearing the cry of the oppressed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as God himself did in the face of the suffering of his people in Egypt (cf. Ex 3:7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSacred Scripture help us to <\/span><b>recognize and respond to the cry of those who are anguished and suffering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, stresses the Pope, recognizing that \u201cthe condition of the poor is a cry that, throughout human history, constantly challenges our lives, societies, political and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economic systems, and, not least, the Church\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilexi te<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 9).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-text-color:var(--awb-custom17);--awb-font-size:22px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;\"><b>Refrain from words that hurt others<\/b><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to fasting, one of the ancient practices of Lent, which refers to the path of abstinence and conversion, the Bishop of Rome recalls that \u201c<\/span><b>austerity alone makes the Christian life strong and authentic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as St. Paul VI said in one of his catechesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, Pope Leo XIV exhorts us to \u201crefrain from words that offend and hurt our neighbor\u201d, and to this end, he invites us to \u201c<\/span><b>disarm our language, avoiding harsh words and rash judgement, refraining from slander and speaking ill of those who are not present <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and cannot defend themselves\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>Instead, let us strive to measure our words and <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>cultivate kindness and respect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our families, among our friends, at work, on social media, in political debates, in the media and in Christian communities. In this way, words of hatred will give way to words of hope and peace\u201d, adds the American Pontiff. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-text-color:var(--awb-custom17);--awb-font-size:22px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;\"><b>A shared journey<\/b><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the Pope highlights the communal dimension of Lent and encourages us to undertake \u201ca shared journey, in <\/span><b>which listening to the word of God, as well as to the cry of the poor and of the earth, becomes part of our community life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and fasting a foundation for sincere repentance\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDear friends, let us ask for the grace of a Lent that leads us to greater attentiveness to God and to the least among us.
