The implications of synodality for Lasallian non-profit organisations <\/b>was one of the topics addressed at the international meeting <\/span>\u2018Bridging the<\/span><\/i><\/a> Gap<\/span><\/i>\u2019, organised by <\/span>the La Salle Foundation<\/span><\/a> at the end of March.<\/span><\/p>\n

What have we learnt from the Church\u2019s synodal process? The Argentinian political expert Juan Esteban Belderrain, who is also a consultant in international cooperation, in sharing his experience and reflections during the meeting and in conversation with <\/span>LaSalleOrg Interviews<\/i><\/b>, states that \u201cwe have learnt a great deal so far and I believe we will continue to learn much more (\u2026). \u201cThose of us who have been working in international cooperation with this call to synodality have realised that perhaps one of the first groups that must take the invitation to synodal conversion very seriously are the cooperation agencies (\u2026). Perhaps that is the first lesson: that <\/span>as entities which collaborate with the Church, or which are part of the Church, synodal conversion is a call for us too<\/b>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Cooperation and Synodality<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

Indeed, for the past three years, a group of 15 international cooperation organisations linked to the mission of the Catholic Church have been asking themselves what it means to cooperate synodally. For Belderrain, this implies, on the one hand, \u201c<\/span>moving away from fragmentation and organisational individualism<\/b>\u201d, since \u201cvery often, cooperation agencies are supporting the same projects in the same areas, yet we do not communicate with one another the work we are doing there\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Argentinian consultant also emphasises that \u201cthe call for solidarity is fundamentally a call to <\/span>overcome the power imbalances that naturally arise in any organisation, and even more so in aid organisations<\/b>, which, by distributing resources, place us in a position of power in front of the recipients of those resources\u201d. This is undoubtedly a sensitive issue which, if not handled appropriately, \u201coften places us in situations that some call paternalism and others call colonialism\u201d, warns Belderrain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, one of the greatest demands of cooperation in a synodal framework, according to the Argentinian political expert \u201cis transparency: that we \u2013 donors, recipients and beneficiaries of the actions \u2013 <\/span>may have complete transparency <\/b>regarding<\/span> the administration of resources, needs<\/b>, and the allocation of resources for that collaboration\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cBreaking out of the walls\u201d<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

To take steps towards synodal cooperation, Belderrain emphasises that it is necessary to \u201cbreak out of the walls\u201d of one\u2019s own organisation. \u201cI believe we need to create more spaces like these\u201d, he says, referring specifically to <\/span>Bridging the Gap<\/span><\/i><\/a>,\u00a0 \u201cwhere those of us working in international cooperation can get to know one another and where <\/span>we allow ourselves to be challenged by others\u2019 ways of working, including those who work in ways that are completely different from our own<\/b>, because we have something to learn from everyone\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, there is <\/span>\u2018the Samaritan imperative<\/b>\u2019. \u201cThat is to say, recognising that in a context where international cooperation resources have diminished so much (\u2026), there is an increasingly explicit duty that our opportunities for cooperation must reach the poorest of the poor, and that we must take a careful, strategic understanding of\u00a0<\/span>who the victims are (\u2026) and clearly allocate resources to their needs\u201d, concludes Belderrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
