This included the construction of prefabricated units, the sanitary facilities, septic tanks, the construction of kitchens and dining room, etc\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nstart of the new school year took place precisely in March, and there were 186 candidates\nfor the 40 places. Even though there were written and oral admission exams, deciding\nbetween applicants was not an easy task for the headteacher, Brother Joseph\nAlak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123051249_HDR-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64825\" width=\"256\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123051249_HDR-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123051249_HDR-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123051249_HDR-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, 45 children were\nselected. The others will try again next year. In order to get into a school of\nhigh quality, they are prepared to lose a full academic year. All the pupils\nthink that it is a big privilege to attend <em>La\nSalle School<\/em>, and that it offers them a great opportunity to turn a new\npage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many stories\nabout boys and girls who see a school education as the way to overcome the\ninherited conviction that \u201cviolence is a sign of virility and the means to\nestablish justice\u201d, in the words of James, one of the boys of the school whom\nBrother Amilcare met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123150668-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64829\" width=\"256\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123150668-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123150668-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasalle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_20190314_123150668-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighteen years old Mary (not her real name) often told Brother Amilcare how she missed out on most of her school years because her family made her work in the <em>cattle camps (<\/em>living out in the open with the cows). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCattle thieves frequently turned up, and sometimes that led to somebody getting killed, which in turn set in progress a chain of vendettas\u201d. Her family wanted her to marry a former priest about fifty years old, and they stopped her returning to school after her holidays at home. She was being held prisoner. Once she escaped but was captured and imprisoned again, and now she cannot leave the school premises for fear of being abducted and held captive. \u201cWhen I came back to the school, my parents, aunts, uncles and cousins all came in a group to take me away. [\u2026] I would like to complete school and then go on to university. I want to be a doctor, but university costs a lot, so I hope someone will help me\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We wish Mary and James all the best in the world in realising their goals and
