“On the 15th May, our three New Zealand Lasallian Schools (De La Salle College Mangere, John Paul College Rotorua and Francis Douglas Memorial College New Plymouth), gathered for our shared Tercentenary Mass at the Cathedral Of The Blessed Virgin Mary in Hamilton. Approximately 100 students from each school attended and they were joined by staff, special guests and Alumni. Our main celebrant was Cardinal John Dew who was joined by Bishop Patrick Dunn and Bishop Stephen Lowe. We were also blessed with a number of concelebrating Priests. The day was a marvellous occasion of prayer, thanksgiving and recognition of our Founder.
The cooperation between our steering committee for the Mass led to an event that will be firmly remembered by those who attended. It was wonderful having a number of Brothers present including our Brother Visitor – Brother David Hawke (District of AUSNZPPNG) and the Sector Mission Council Chair for Pakistan, Brother Shahzad Gill. A highlight of the Mass was the procession of the Founders Statue and the unveiling of a beautifully framed icon kindly supplied by Br David. The Choir and the Band were just excellent, plus John Paul College Rotorua presented a touching drama linked to the Gospel reading. I felt blessed to be a part of this significant memorial event and extremely proud to be a Lasallian in this Tercentenary Year. Live Jesus in our hearts!”
